Howard Lee Limmer, 1940–2024

of Snyder died Monday, January 22, 2024, at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of 83. Howard was born on September 5, 1940 in Hamilton, Texas, to Lee Limmer and Edna Bottlinger Limmer. When Howard was five, the family moved to Slaton, Texas, when his father became an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad. He grew up there alongside his older sisters, Natrell Limmer Love and Charlene Limmer Gilliland. As an adolescent, he was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Slaton. He was a member of the Slaton Tigers football team and enjoyed the thrill and fun of being a rodeo bull rider. It was in Slaton that he began working for the C.R. Anthony Company as a young man.

He married the love of his life, Carolyn Pohl of Matador, Texas, on May 21, 1963, in Clovis, New Mexico. After moving to Snyder with his family in 1968, he became a longtime businessman who devoted his time and talents to the C.R. Anthony Company store that he managed for 32 years. During his time with the company, the store he managed was bestowed the honor of being named a Million Dollar Store. Later, Howard was instrumental in securing the only freestanding Anthony’s location in the entire chain. It was built on College Avenue in Snyder. In September 1992, he opened Limmer’s Ladies Apparel on the Snyder square. He owned and operated the store until he was elected Scurry County commissioner, Precinct Three. He was proud to serve the people of Scurry County for 16 years. Howard was vital in getting the first wind farm to Scurry County. He also was on the commissioners court when the new jail was built to benefit Scurry County and the surrounding areas.

Howard was a member of the Methodist Church, the Jaycees, the Snyder Gold Coats, the Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge. He held offices in several of these organizations. He also enjoyed coaching his sons, Bryan and Jayson, in Boys’ Club football. The family enjoyed water sports and spent many hours on Lake LBJ. Howard also enjoyed scuba diving, eating Texas barbecue, listening to Robert Earl Keen, playing Ms. Pac-Mac, looking at old cars, going fishing, attending music festivals with his sons, buying crystal bowls for Carolyn and rooting for the Red Raiders. He was also a champion watermelon seed spitter—threatening the world record at the 2003 DeLeon Annual Peach and Melon Festival. Howard and Carolyn loved to travel and went to many places, including visiting their family in Taiwan and touring Europe on a Viking river cruise. Closer to home, they waltzed across Texas, going to the Snyder Western Swing dances every year and the Cowboy Christmas Ball in Anson.

Howard’s greatest joys were his wife of 61 years, Carolyn, and their two beloved sons, Bryan and Jayson. Becoming Opa to five grandchildren fueled the fire of love, pride and fun. Later, he was thrilled when his family grew with two adorable great-granddaughters. To say that Howard was joyful, fun-loving, and a person with a positive attitude would describe him well. He was a loyal friend and devoted to his wife and family.

Howard is survived by his wife, Carolyn Limmer; sons Bryan (Cari) Limmer and Jayson (Kathy) Limmer; five grandchildren: Griffin (Kayla) Limmer, Bailey (Brian Gardner) Limmer, Hannah Limmer, Natalie Limmer, and Allison Limmer; and two great-granddaughters, Bryar Limmer and Indie Limmer; as well as sisters Natrell Love and Charlene Gilliland. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 26 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home in Snyder, Texas. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Methodist Church in Snyder, Texas with Pastor Derrell Patterson officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Gardens.
