Mary J. Holt Woods was born December 3, 1935 in Berryville, Arkansas to William (Bill) Henderson Holt and Cleo Holt. She died December 27, 2016 in Plainview, Texas. Funeral service was Friday, December 30, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Quitaque with Brother Chris Tucker and Pastor James Stephens officiating. Visitation immediately followed in the fellowship hall. Arrangements were under the care of Moore-Rose Funeral.

Mary met James Colquett (Duke) Woods in Durango, Colorado and they married April 14, 1954. This wonderful union lasted sixty-two years. Mary and Duke were blessed with three children, Velda Ross, Jimmy Woods, and Randy Woods.

Mary and Duke spent many years in Colorado and returned to Quitaque to make their permanent home. Mary spent the remainder of her life as a Quitaque resident. For a short time, in the 1980s, she and Duke lived abroad in Saudi Arabia and Africa.

Mary had the spirit of a traveler and was always ready for the next adventure.   She loved to see the world and meet new people. Mary embraced the years spent abroad and remembered that time fondly as a time when she made many friends she would have for the rest of her life. Mary was always active and could make her way down a mountain or across a lake on a pair of snow or water skis well into her sixties. She also was a swimming instructor and taught many kids throughout the area how to swim.

Mary was always an active part of the community and may be best remembered for her cooking skills. She spent many years cooking for the community in various capacities, and will especially be remembered for her hot rolls and those famous cinnamon rolls. She also loved passing these skills on to the younger generations and some of her happiest times were spent cooking with the great-grandkids.

Mary’s family meant the world to her. She was very grateful for her wonderful years with Duke and was proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was always there when she was needed and valued the time she was able to spend with them. Survivors include her husband, Duke, daughter Velda Ross and husband Jimmy of Quitaque, son Jimmy and wife Mary of Borger, son Randy and wife Candace of Plainview, her grandchildren: Julie Ross of Amarillo, Janet Brooks and husband Josh of Memphis, Sammie-Dee Varnell and husband Cory of Quitaque, Tiffany Woods of Turkey, Kim Jolly and husband Allen of Turkey, Emily Raburn and husband Dale of Lubbock, Landon Woods of College Station, and Melissa Darsey of Borger, her great-grandchildren: Braylee Brooks, Hunter Varnell, Cooper Lamb, Kamree Varnell, Cade Lamb, Caitlyn Lamb, Tucker Brooks, and Addison Raburn.  She is also survived by four sisters, Ann Waters of Albuquerque, NM, Billie Geisler and husband Alex of Grand Junction, CO, Mable Lewis and husband Ray of Durango, CO, and Jackie Holt and Lee Martin of Grand Junction, CO.
