AG Day was held on October 24, 2017 at the Hall County Show Barn in Memphis Texas.
5th grade students from Memphis, Clarendon, Hedley, Valley, Silverton, Motley County, and Claude gathered in Memphis to be exposed to all things agriculture. The day started with electric safety provided by Lighthouse Electric Company. The classes were then divided up and went through concurrent sessions that included demonstrations and information in Cotton, Beef Cattle, Pork, Cereal Grains, Corn, Peanuts, Soil Erosion, Water Cycle, Farm Equipment, and Show Animals. These sessions taught these youth that they are involved with agriculture every day in some form or fashion. These students are exposed to live animals and get to see what the raw product looks like before it gets to the grocery store or clothing store.
The Texas Farm Bureau sent their interactive ag trailer that has interactive learning modules to assist the youth in learning. Hall County NRCS presented information on erosion. The Mesquite Underground Water District presented the water cycle and the importance of ground water to our communities. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agents from Hall, Donley, Motley, Armstrong, and Briscoe Counties presented information about Beef Cattle, Pork and Cereal Grains. The day wrapped up with a demonstration by the South Western Dairy Farmers. The youth were able to see a cow being milked and how that milk is collected in order to be taken to the grocery store. Memphis 4-H and FFA and Silverton 4-H and FFA youth served as Group Leaders and Presenters.
