June Events

Mark your calendars for these great family-friendly events at your favorite state park,
located just 3 miles north of Quitaque!

 

June 16:

Prairie Safari at 10am. Reservations required. Join us for a tour of the prairie ecosystem in our open air tram. Anything from the black-tailed prairie dog, burrowing owl, or even the Texas State Bison Herd may be seen and discussed. Space is limited so reservations are required. Please call the park at (806) 455-1492 to reserve your spot.

Goin’ Batty at 2pm: Join us for a read-aloud and play some bat games as we go “batty” learning all about bats! You can even make your own Mexican Free-tailed bat to take home with you! Program is designed for children 12 and under.

Music Under the Stars at 7pm: Join local musicians Cecil White and John Walker as they remember the music of musical stars of the past, such as Chet Atkins and Floyd Cramer. This event is FREE with your paid park entrance fee.

 

June 23:

Little Habitat on the Prairie at 9am: Join us for a hike on the Canyon Rim trail to discover a little habitat full of animals and plants that live in the prairies of Caprock Canyons State Park. Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and bring plenty of water.

Caprock Bingo at 2pm: Join us for a fun game of bingo, where you can learn more about the many different resources of the park, escape the summer heat, and win some neat prizes!

The Park after Dark at 9pm: Join us to discover that the park is still full of activity even after dark! Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and be sure to bring a flashlight!

 

June 30:

Caprock Van Tour at 10am: Join us for a guided vehicle tour throughout the park. Learn the ins and outs of the park, including the history and geology that may not be as apparent to you without the guidance of a park ranger. Space is limited so reservations are required. Please call the park at (806) 455-1492 for reservations.

Texas State Bison Herd at 9pm: Learn all about the official bison herd of the state of Texas by joining us for this slide-show presentation. We will discuss the unique history and genetics of this historic herd. Please bring a flashlight as it will be dark after the program.

 

Special programs this month are the summer “Bat Tours” which will be held every Friday this month. Clarity Tunnel, an abandoned railway tunnel on the Caprock Canyons Trailway, is home to up to half-a-million Mexican Free-tailed bats each summer. During these guided vehicle tours along the Trailway, visitors will view the bat emergence flight and enjoy spectacular views of the rugged and beautiful breaks of the Llano Estacado. Tours begin 1.5 hours before sunset each evening and take about 3 hours to complete. Please call (806) 455-1492 for reservations and for more information. There is limited availability for each tour so be sure to reserve your spot. Tours fill up quickly!

Park admission: adults, $3; seniors, $2; children 12 and under, free. Camping is available, along with hiking, biking, fishing, and many other outdoor and recreational opportunities. All programs are free with paid park entrance fee. For more information, please call (806) 455-1492.
