Elvin B. Norris

Elvin B. Norris passed away peacefully on November 26, 2018. He was 89 years old. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Silverton on Saturday, December 1 at 11am. Burial and the traditional playing of Taps will follow at the Silverton Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, November 30 from 12pm-8pm at Moore-Rose funeral home in Silverton.
Elvin was born August 17, 1929 in Briscoe County to Mart and Loveta Norris. He grew up working the fields picking cotton and later cowboying. In 1947 he headed to California to meet his soul mate Dorthy Flinn. They were married April 17, 1951 and spent the next 66 years building a family, forging a military career and creating a legacy. He was in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was awarded The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart, and The Meritorious Service Medal. He retired from active duty in 1985. After retirement he continued his work for the Lord accepting the position of Director of Missions for Mount Graham Baptist Association in Arizona. It was during this time that he made 4 missionary trips to Kenya. In 2005 they moved back to Silverton and joined the First Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher and guest pastor to the congregation and many area churches. In 2017 Elvin was honored to receive The Distinguished Alumni award from Dallas Baptist University. He was a man dedicated to his family and his faith in God. Elvin loved to preach the gospel and watch westerns on TV. Wherever he traveled he left an indelible impression on everyone he met. Elvin will be missed by many people.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers Leland Norris and Butch Norris and 3 sisters Fern Parker, Francis Davis, and Cindy Thomas.
Elvin is survived by his loving wife Dorthy Norris of Silverton; his brother Edwin Norris and wife Ann; sister Ruby Lee and husband Kenneth all of Silverton. He leaves his 2 children Martin Norris and wife Kelly of Bartlett, TN and Michael Norris of Silverton; his grandchildren; Charles Colton of Arlington, TX; Krista Burt and husband Christopher of Bartlett, TN; Megan Kernodle and husband Travis of Jackson, TN; James Norris of Bartlett, TN; Shelby Norris of Silverton; his great grandchildren Annabel Burt, Kolby Norris and Silas Kernodle.
