2-1A BOYS BASKETBALL
KAY ELLINGTON | CAPROCK COURIER
The Valley Patriots boys’ varsity basketball team are 6-0, but they have four games left.
The Caprock Courier caught up with second-year coach Garrett Watson as 2-1A begins its final sprint to the playoffs.
“My first year at Valley (last year) we were in district 4 and were the undefeated district champs. As of right now, yes, we are undefeated and in the lead for the district title,” Watson said.
The Patriots played a lot of playoff ball last year. “We made it to the Regional Quarterfinals last year (3rd round) before getting knocked out by Texline. If we win our district, there is a good chance we match up with Texline for our first playoff game in the second round.”
However, 2021 is not 2020. “The big difference this year has been our ability to play together as a team. Through six different games our scoring has been spread out across the team. We have had five different lead scorers through six games in district. Being able to put five guys on the floor who can all score at our level has been a recipe for success for us this year,” the coach said.
The Patriots had a baptism by fire getting ready for district. “Our non-district schedule was a gauntlet, with more than half of our games being against larger schools” Watson said.
Tuesday, Feb. 9 the Patriots face Claude at home. Tip-off is at 8 p.m.
