When the Briscoe County Cookoff Committee hosts its annual chili cookoff at the Quitaque Country Club on July 31 this year, the public will be invited to sample the chili. Pulled pork sandwiches will also be available.

Anyone can enter the contest. The entry fee is $20. Entries will be presented to judges at 1 p.m. The Briscoe County Cookoff Committee makes an annual donation in partnership with Friends of Briscoe County to Silverton Senior Citizens for the upkeep of their building and other expenses. The Senior Citizens group provides home-made desserts for the commit-tee’s fundraising events.

Two scholarships are also offered by the Briscoe County Cookoff Committee each year for any Briscoe County high school senior who plans to attend a technical, vocational or trade school. Recent South Plains College graduate Bradley Carter was the recipient of one such scholarship, which helped him complete his training in welding.

The committee is planning their annual barbecue cookoff for September 18. Competitors must contact a committee member, such as Rick Hester or Wylie Bomar, to enter. Bomar can be reached at (806) 777-1664. Contact Hester at (806) 292-2262.
