When I was a child, she sat in front of us at church. I can still see the back of her head – all horizontal waves, one above the other. She probably wore a hat with a facial veil, but I spent more time viewing those waves than her face. How did she make them? I think she simply applied sugar water to her hair and pressed the waves in with her fingers.
