Overheard
I joined the Women’s Army Corps in 1949. After basic training at Camp Lee, Va., I took a leader’s course and was eventually assigned to a training center as an acting platoon sergeant. My designation was Troop Information and Education.
In December of 1950, I was shipped to Japan and to the Northern Command at Camp Fowler. My duties were to inform and educate the American personnel stationed there about Japanese culture. This was done by attending various events, such as festivals celebrating the spring planting and fall harvest and Kabuki theater. I was accompanied by a photographer and an interpreter. Our reports were written up for articles in troop newsletters.
Near our post was an orphanage. We had monthly collections help with expenses. Occasionally we’d take a special treat and visit the nuns and children.
One time we took ice cream and cookies. The children didn’t know what the little wooden spoons were for, so to my amazement and delight, they used chopsticks to eat their ice cream!
