While serving at an Army anti-aircraft gun battery in Manila during World War II, I heard my brother, Oscar, was stationed at the U.S. air base at Lingayen on the other side of the Philippines at Luzon.
I was able to get a weekend pass, but Oscar’s base was more than 150 miles away. I hitched some rides from the Marine and Army transport units that were constantly moving about the island. …
