Joy Nell Rainey, 90, of Lubbock passed away Friday, September 20, 2024. She was born June 16, 1934, in Tahoka, Texas, to Ed and Opal (Jackson) Hamilton.

Joy graduated from Tahoka High School. She married Jay Rainey on February 10, 1955, in Tahoka, Texas. Joy was a homemaker; she made costumes for school plays, and everyone called her mom as she was very involved in her children’s lives and their school activities. Joy’s pastimes included cooking, especially Sunday dinners, entertaining friends and family, bird watching, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Joy was a member of Sunset Church of Christ.

Joy is survived by her children, Misty Pringle and husband, Kevin, of Wilson, Texas; Windy Shannon of Matador Texas; and Sunny Tidwell and husband, Jim, of Lubbock, Texas; sister Vicky Tate and husband, Bob, of Lubbock, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Opal Hamilton of Tahoka, Texas; husband, Jay Rainey of Lubbock, Texas, in 1999; her sister Edie Whitfield of Sherman, Texas; and her brother, Harold Hamilton of Greensboro, N.C.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, with family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway, Lubbock. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Sunset Church of Christ in Lubbock, and burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Tahoka Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made in Joy’s name to the Sunset International Bible Institute.
