William Paul “Billy Paul” Campbell, 68, of Matador, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Billy Paul was a devoted Christian and follower of Jesus Christ. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Matador, Texas for 52 years.
Born on August 29, 1957, to Kirby and Joyce Campbell of Matador, Texas, Billy Paul spent his life rooted in the land he loved dearly. Known by many names— Billy Paul, BP, and Campbell— he was respected and loved by many.
Billy Paul was the little brother of James Campbell, and the big brother to Douglas Campbell. He and Douglas shared countless childhood adventures, often involving their two ponies, Trigger and Lollipop. They played out many Roy Rogers scenes riding the ponies around Matador. It was later revealed that Billy Paul frequently participated in the local horse races with Trigger.
Billy Paul and Douglas shared a special bond that only two brothers could understand. Their brotherly bond remained strong throughout life, and Douglas’s devoted care during Billy Paul’s final year was a testament to that unbreakable connection. As a young boy, Billy Paul loved playing Little League and Pony League baseball, where he shone as a pitcher. He often reminisced about those golden summers spent on the field with his teammates and Coach Willard.
Billy Paul graduated from Matador High School in 1975 and earned his Bachelor of Science from West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M University) in 1979. While there, he was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. During his sophomore year, he met Lori, the love of his life, and the two married in 1979. Together they shared 46 wonderful years of marriage, welcoming JoBeth in 1985 and Britt Paul in 1988.
Billy Paul was a dedicated father. He enjoyed coaching his children’s Little Dribblers basketball teams in Idalou, Texas, and although his career often required travel, he made it a priority to be present at every possible school and sporting event. He led by example, teaching his children the values of hard work, honesty and faith.
Professionally, Billy Paul built a remarkable career spanning more than 40 years in agricultural chemical sales, working with Elanco, ICI, Zeneca, and Syngenta. Much of his work centered around the cotton industry, where he earned the trust and friendship of countless farmers and distributors. In 2020, his Lifelong passion for ranching led him to join the Ranch, Range, and Pasture Division of Bayer (now ENVU), a role that truly reflected his heart’s calling.
Billy Paul was a proud sixth-generation rancher (est. 1837). Billy Paul purchased his first cattle in 1985 and steadily grew his cow-calf operation over the years, running cattle across 16,000 acres of the ranchland he cherished. Beyond his professional and ranching pursuits, Billy Paul dedicated his time to organizations that embodied his values of community, stewardship and agriculture, serving in many leadership roles. Though his boots may be empty, his footprints remain on every acre he touched and in the hearts of all who loved him.
He is survived by his mother, Joyce Campbell; his beloved wife, Lori Campbell; his daughter and son-in-law, JoBeth and Matt Vance; grandchildren Sterling Paul Vance and Stetson Douglas Vance; son and daughter-in-law, Britt and Ashley Campbell; grandchildren Hugh Paul Campbell, Goldie Mae Campbell and Hutch William Campbell; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Janie Campbell; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
