Calvin Andrew Nimmo, 96, of Canadian, Texas, and formerly of Matador, Texas, passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2021 in Canadian.
Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2021 in East Mound Cemetery in Matador with Wayland Moore and Rev. Eddy Helms, pastor of First Baptist Church of Matador, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mr. Nimmo will be available for viewing beginning Sunday until Tuesday at noon at the funeral home in Canadian and on Wednesday morning from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the First Baptist Church of Matador.
Calvin was born June 9, 1925 in Northfield, Texas, to Andrew and Pearl Thelma Nimmo. He was a graduate of Tell High School and was a standout on the basketball team. Soon after high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He served in five major battles during his time, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Philippines, Battle of Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Borneo Campaign, and Hiroshima, Japan.
Calvin loved his country dearly but hated war. Many people have heard him tell the story of his divine diversion from a near unfortunate mishap to a safe return for him and his shipmates. On February 5, 1948, he married the love of his life, Virginia Moore, in Childress, Texas. She passed away on February 21, 2012 after celebrating 64 years of marriage with Calvin.
Calvin worked for Texas Department of Transportation in the engineering department for over 33 years, retiring in 1984. He was a cattleman for many years in Motley County. He enjoyed his time feeding and tending to the cattle with his wife. Calvin was a member of First Baptist Church in Matador for over 60 years. He always took care of his family, helping out any way he could.
Calvin spent the past five years at Mesa View Assisted Living in Canadian, where he loved the residents and was welcomed, loved, and well cared for. He also loved to play dominoes. He was very proud of his Quilt of Valor that was presented to him in Canadian.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
Survivors include his son, John and D’Ann Nimmo of Wills Point, Texas; two daughters, Kelly Prater and husband Wyman of Canadian, and Dixie Johnson and husband Darrel of Silverton, Texas; six grandsons, John Paul Nimmo and wife Carrie, Andrew Nimmo and wife Carol, Michael Nimmo and wife Stephanie, Heath Prater and wife Nikki, Dr. Ory Johnson and wife Larkin, and Shawn Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Charli Nimmo, Travis Nimmo, Hank Prater, Reagan Johnson, and Peyton Johnson; and a brother, Jerrel Nimmo and wife Diana of Northfield, Texas.
