Tom Gerald Wright

WICHITA FALLS—“And he said to him, ‘Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise’” (Luke 23:43). Escorted by angels from earth, and into the arms of his Lord, Tom Gerald Wright passed away peacefully at his home in Wichita Falls, Texas, in the early morning hours of March 13, 2023. Tom grew up in Canyon, Texas, and was one of five children to the late John Wright and their mother, Mary Wright.

At just 22 years of age, Tom was called to serve his country in the Korean War from November 6, 1956 to November 1, 1957, during which he received an Honorable Discharge. One year later, on November 29, 1958, he married the love of his life, Sharron Sue Gallegly of Amarillo, Texas. Tom and Sue built their life together in Canyon, Texas; Claude, Texas; and Matador, Texas, and ultimately called Paducah, Texas, their home for over 45 years. Tom and Sue moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, in 2020.

During their time in Paducah, Tom accomplished many great things. Among those was serving as the county executive director of the Cottle County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Tom worked for the USDAASCS office from April 8, 1968 to October 3, 1994. Tom was also a farmer, rancher, and served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Paducah, where he and Sue attended. Tom and Sue grew their family with two sons, David Wright of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Frank Wright of Paducah, Texas.

Tom had a love for many things, first and foremost being his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who we know greeted him with a “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Second was his devoted love to his sweet “Suzie” for 64 precious years. Tom also had a great love for the Dallas Cowboys, fishing with his sons and grandkids who knew him by Papaw, traveling with his wife, and swapping small-town stories over a good cup of coffee with his buddies.

Tom is survived by his wife, Sue, of Wichita Falls; two sons, David Wright and wife, Sally, of Wichita Falls and Frank Wright and wife, Dana of Paducah; one sister, Willie Brady of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Crystal Johnson and husband, Jeremy, of Wichita Falls, Jackie Wright of Wichita Falls, Jenny Bateman and husband, Bo, of Electra, Hailey Hawkins and husband, Travis, of Knox City, and Hayden Wright of Canyon; and six great-grandchildren, Savannah, Mason and Natalie Johnson, Josie and Olivia Crutcher and Dawson Bateman.

In the last few years of his life, along with his wife, Tom was aided in no small part by the compassionate, selfless, and loving care of his caregivers, Christy Williamson and Christina Miller, both of whom Tom’s family wishes to thank deeply and dearly. True Angel’s on earth.

Tom is preceded in death by his mother and father, two brothers Jay and Frank, one sister, Thalia (Sis), and one great-grandson, Tres Johnson.

The family respectfully requests that any memorials in Tom’s name be sent as a donation to the First Baptist Church of Paducah, P. O. Box 609, Paducah, TX 79248 or Paducah Garden of Memories Cemetery, P. O. Box 805, Paducah TX 79248.
