Two days after his 17th birthday, my uncle Bert Johnson joined the Marine Corps. After boot camp, Bert was sent to Korea, where he became friends with Eugene Obregon. The two young men came from entirely different backgrounds but were the same age. Bert was from the small farm town of Grand Prairie, Texas. Eugene grew up in Los Angeles, California.
