Guthrie district runner-up in UIL Academics

Guthrie Common School District was the UIL Academic District Runner-up to Jayton in last week’s district UIL meet in Jayton.

Overheard

My sister and I left our family’s midtown Manhattan apartment in New York City on Jully 23, 1954, for an overnight bus trip to Niagara Falls. I was 18; Joyce was four days shy of 23. The trip and the expensive new camera she brought along were probably early birthday presents from our parents.

FRIENDSHIP QUILTERS

The Silverton Senior Citizens had their monthly meeting Friday with a very nice crowd attending and we enjoyed a very good meal. We were glad to have Kathy May bring her portable organ, and she sang several cowboy songs.

March 29, 1979—One Act Play selected as district alternate. Liz Brown was selected for All Star cast, and Ramona Clay received honorable mention. Others in the cast were Carol Stodghill, Roxanne Bullock, Cynthia Edwards, Kim Fitzgerald, Bill Denton, Cam Forbes and Earl Jarrett.

Advisers cowed by dictators

It’s no wonder dictators don’t always do the right thing. They’re surrounded by yes men—plus some yes women. Nobody dares tell them they’re wrong. There I go, stereotyping dictators. Some no doubt listen to the counsel of those whose opinions differ from their own.

Soffritto: so good, and so good for you

Soffritto is a combination of onion, carrot, and celery. In Italy, soffritto is finely diced, uniformly. But it is very similar to the French version, called mirepoix, which is often diced a bit larger. The threesome is also referred to as the holy trinity by some.
