Body I looked forward to Halloween in the early 1950s. Mommy, Daddy and I lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., and on Halloween Mommy dressed me in an old white bed sheet and a scary mask that we bought at the five and dime store.

Body Last week the Quitaque Fire Department presented a special program at Valley School for 2023 Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is Kitchen Fire Safety, and in addition to checking out the fire trucks, students watched a live demonstration of how to extinguish a cooking fire.

Body Matador’s one-day festival of music, food and fun, Foothills Celebration is set for this Saturday, Oct. 21, in downtown Matador. Gates open at 11 a.m. A day of family fun is planned including food trucks, cornhole, booth vendors and music acts and events throughout the day.

Body Silverton School plans to honor local veterans with a Field of Flags display of the United States of America flag, according to a school press release. Community members are invited to submit veteran names by completing a form and submitting a $10 payment.

Body After a day of competing in the Silver Spur Cross Country meet in Spur Oct. 11, Guthrie and Paducah cross country runners, along with coaches and parents, stopped in at TC’s Ponderosa in Dickens for a bite of barbecue before their homeward journey.
